Caddis ?

On the search for this Spring's caddis on the Yellowstone.  Did we find them?  Indeed!  River and weather conditions were about as good as they get yesterday afternoon.  Moderate overcast skies, not too cold, and lack of wind for the first couple hours lent to a solid hatch activity bringing most fish to the surface to feed.  Besides a good start to the Mother's Day Caddis, we encountered March Browns (size 12 mayflies) and Baetis hatching at the same time.  Fish were not in the mood to be picky, but were instead eating all 3.  Caddis activity was perfect.  Not too few- just straggling off- nor a full blown explosion hatch that blanketed the water bank to bank.  As the afternoon wore on a nagging North wind became prevalent along with rain showers.  With this the hatch and subsequent surface feeding by all the Yellowstone trout subsided.  We had had our fill by then and a simple float out (cold beverage included!) to the waiting trucks at the takeout was enjoyed by all.  What's the rest of the weekend hold?  Hopefully more of the same!  Sat is looking like another overcast day with intermixed rain showers.  Hatch activity may be moderated some with the slightly cooler weather but you should see all 3 bug species and fish up on top again.  Sunday through Tues looking like a warm up.  Sun and heat will get the caddis going full blown.  Expect to have a lot of competition for your fly out there!  ON the downside, with the sun and warmth, be sure to keep an eye on the flows.  Bets are that the Lamar will jump considerably and our clean 3 plus feet of vis in the river will diminish.  How quick will it go to runoff mode?  No telling, but these next 4-5 days are for sure your window to get out there!
