September Fishing on the Yellowstone River

September is here and we feel very lucky this year to still have good fishing in our backyard. Mother Nature gave us a scare this spring with a shorter runoff but due to numerous rain showers and storms, our water has kept cool and fishing has been pretty good. A big thank you to all of our summer guests this year. We hope to see you again in the future! To everyone joining us for September and October, welcome! We are looking forward to a great end of the summer and what is shaping up to be a great fall.

This time of year we are still seeing some terrestrials. Hoppers, ants, beetles, crickets, and spruce moths being the go to patterns once the day warms up. The populations of these bugs are starting to wain due to cooler temperatures at night. The best fishing has been on parachute attractor patterns like the Copper haze, Purple haze, Adams, and Green Drakes. The beadhead nymphs are sure to get you some whitefish takes as they ramp up for their spawning season but you will catch a few trout on these patterns as well. In some of the cloudy and what some people consider “crappy” weather we have seen good fishing. Last week we had a report of Mahogany’s coming off mid-morning. As we get further into September we will start to see more aquatic bugs and less terrestrials. Flipping over some rocks we are starting to see more green and amber Caddis larva. Still a little early for fall baetis. Fish are starting to move into the riffles and runs. Fish these as well as the inside seems and shelves. Remember low water + good clarity = wary fish. Think about using some smaller tippet and longer leaders to get fish to eat.

Fishing in the Park has been pretty good in the North East corner. Lots of crowds though. Terrestrials and Drakes. The Madison has started to fish a little with Caddis pupa, soft hackles, Sculpins, and Zonkers. The Firehole is still a little warm midday to fish.
