- Scott A4
Scott Fly Rod Co has recently updated it’s “A” series rod with yet another winner. The new A4 carries on where the A3 left off. Initially a bit disappointed that Scott decided to drop the A3 as that has become one of the all time best mid-priced rods we’ve ever had in the store. I was not disappointed after the first cast with the new A4. Looking similar to the top end S4 and S4s rods, the new A4 has Scott’s newer multi modulus graphite lay-up with the ‘signature Scott’ unsanded blank finish, very nice accent wraps on the guide feet, full REC components as well as Scott’s unconditional lifetime warranty. Did I mention they are hand crafted in Montrose, Colorado? Yes! Made in America rod craftsmanship at a mid $300 price level makes the A4 one of the best performance fly rods out there.
Having more ‘punch’ than its predecessor, the A4 is a crisp rod capable of precise in close short distance casting as well as the long bomb. Light in hand, quick to recover, easy to cast, this is a great rod that will enable first time fly fisherperson to grow with their casting yet not grow out of. The A4’s will fulfill the quiver needs of any fly rodder looking to add to his/her collection of rods for specific needs. Scott has several A4s to fill the bill for Czech nymphers who like the 10 foot 4 & 5 wt rods or for the lake fishermen who again like the longer lengths in the bigger line sizes 6-8. For the saltwater fisherman, the A4 is a fantastic value rod. I fished the 9foot 8 weight while in Mexico recently and really came to love this rod for its versatility on the flats.
The A3 may have been the Ford F-250 of fly rods for the past several years. Work it, beat it, abuse it, make it do things you wouldn’t do with your $700 fly rod just cause you could, and it kept on going, the new A4 is that same ¾ ton Ford under the hood, but in the King Ranch Edition trim.
