Upper Madison Fishing Report 7/16/14
The flood of boat trailers that showed up for the salmonfly hatch may have moved on but fishing above Ennis remains a great option. River flows and temps are ideal for dry fly fishing right now and excellent PMD and caddis activty have kept the fish interested. Yellowsallies and Golden stones are still getting eaten but the stonefly bite has cooled off. Fishing underwater with combinations of stonefly, caddis, and mayfly nymphs remains a safe bet. Bring the full dry fly arsenal if you're head this way and be ready to change things up as hatches progress. We like size 12 Copper hazes and the fish do too!

Upper Madison Fishing Report 7/9/14
While the big slamonfly hatch has moved on, the big bugs are still lingering around and the trout haven't stopped looking for an easy meal up top. Fishing a large stonefly dry with a dropped has been the best strategy with stonefly nymphs and caddis pupae being our favorite droppers. Keep your eyes open for localized hatches of PMDs, little yellowsallies, and larger chocolate caddis as the fish will certainly come up and eat if the bugs are available. Nymphing with a stonefly-stonefly combo or stonefly-caddis dropper also has been effective particularly in deeper pockets. Keep your flies in the water and the fish will follow.

Upper Madison Fishing Report 7/3/14

The salmonflies are here! If you want to chase the big bugs head up river to Lyons Bridge or Pallisades, tie on the biggest dry fly you've got, and hang on. Golden stones, yellow sallies, caddis, and PMDs round out the current fish fare. Fish are holding along the banks and in larger mid-river pockets and seams. Don't expect to be the only one on the river, but willing fish and strong hatches has meant a lot of hook-ups! Slipping in below the salmoflies has proved to be very productive as the golden stones and larger chocolate caddis have kept the fish looking up. Lower flows have meant wade fishing is a great option right now so grab your waders and hit the road!

Upper Madison Fishing Report 6/25/14
The big bugs have yet to show up yet, but the nymphing has made for some great all-day action. The big salmonfly nymphs are crawling towards the shore, so fishing lightly weighted stonefly imitations up against the bank and in pocket water is a sure bet. For your second nymph consider either another stonefly or tie on a caddis pupa beadhead. Keep an eye out for rising fish where the tributaries pour in and create longer seams. There have been a few fish willing to take larger dries such as Chubby Chernobyls and Chernobyl Ants, but we are still waiting for the big bug action to move into full swing. Periods of cloudier skies still are providing good streamer fishing for those looking for the big tugs. Flows are hovering right at 1,100 CFS and clarity is continuing to improve. There is some rain in the forecast for the next week so don't forget the rain coats if you're headed that way but the fishing will be great!

Upper Madison Flyfishing:

Cold weather this past week has kept the salmonflies at bay but fishing has remained solid. It'll be a minute before we leave the little dry box at home in favor of big bugs but for now enjoy some excellent Caddis and good PMD fishing. Fish are being caught on a range of patterns with subsurface nymphing being the most effective method. Big stonefly nymphs with smaller droppers below an indicator has been the ticket. For droppers we like caddis but don't hesitate to ditch the dropper for a second stonefly if they are grabbing the first. Grey skies and rain have made for some good streamer fishing and we expect that will continue as long the colder weather holds.

Upper Madison Flyfishing:

Caddis and PMD fishing to continues to keep things interesting and the Salmonflies are primed to hatch within the next week and a half. Water remains milky but getting better by the day. Above average streamer fishing with big black buggers makes for some plenty of big brown trout and high-fives.  Flows have been decreased which should make for some excellent dry-fly action in the coming days. Throwing stonefly nymphs under an indicator will also yield good results until the Salmonfly emergencegets going full swing. The Chubby Chernobyl hatch will quickly follow.
