Yellowstone River - August 16th, 2012
  • Recorded:
  • Mostly sunny
  • 92 ° F
  • Fishing: Good
Good fishing still holding up on the Stone.  Although with hot weather, it's getting technical out there.  Water conditions are good as far as clarity goes. We had a push of mud this last week but it vanished like houdini. From top (Gardiner) to bottom (somewhere east of Big Timber) the river is clear.  Viz is back to 4 feet plus in most places.  Water temps are getting up there- especially in the afternoons.  Time to get on early and get off.  Fishing is picking back up in the evenings however once the direct sun gets off the water.  Look for the hopper bite to gradually get better and better.  Other terrestrials  and general attractors are not to be left out.  Time also to not just concentrate on the banks and super obvious structure along the banks.  Fish are moving well off the banks in a lot of places and are willing to eat if you get the right drift. We are supposed to be getting a cooling relief the next couple days, High of 65 on the 15th - thinking it will be good out there!

Yellowstone River - July 24th, 2012

  • Fishing: Excellent
Outstanding fishing to be had on the Stone.  Conditions from top to bottom are once again prime with no forseeable mud or problems coming from T-storms.  Dry fly game is back on in full force and reports have been very positive.  Terrestrials are starting to kick in and become a much bigger factor in the fishing game than in the weeks past.  Did someone say hoppers?

That large mud plug has moved through and things are clear and clean once again.  Good reports from Gardiner downstream to Livingston as far as water goes.  Anything from 3 feet of viz up high to just going green down around Livy and a little east.

  • Fishing: Great
It's been a bit of a dodging game lately here on the Stone. Dodging small mud plugs that is.  Recent daily thunderstorms have turned the Lamar and Gardner rivers from cleand and good to go to mud.  Though the mud plugs have been short lived so far, there are multiples in the river systems.  All this transpires with some color shifts here in the main Yellowstone downstream from the Park.  Today may be the clincher though.  This one looks pretty sizable and may go through the whole of Paradise Valley before the day is out.  Go EAST!

Fishing should be good from Livingston to Big Timber today.  Best bets from reports we have had are "down under" with a bugger/bead combo and and indicator.
