Lower Madison Flyfishing Report 4/21/15
The lower Madison gained some color to it this last week but had some very good fishing. Fish were eating streamers that were stripped, and also subsurface on nymph rigs. We saw a good number of caddis out but fish were not as willing to eat from the surface. San Juan worms, crayfish, and prince nymphs are all good options. Throw your favorite sculpin pattern to entice a big brown to eat. Don't just fish the banks. We have seen lots of people out on the lower in boats and on foot so remember to be respectful and share the river!

Lower Madison Flyfishing Report
Been seeing a bunch of driftboats behind trucks and Subarus this week... Must be that "spring" has sprung.  For now anyway.  Lots of folks getting out and getting after it with teh warmth and sunshine!  We're hearing that the Lower Maddy has been good this week.  Fish up on midges in the right conditions which is cool.  Otherwise the fish are going to be in the "buckets" and the deeper runs.  Look for as much depth as you can find and off speed water.  If you've read the other reports, you'll see that this is a common characteristic of successful winter fishing!  Be consistent and slow with your fishing approach.  One good drift through is not nearly enough.   50 casts?? That's more like it.

Lower Madison Flyfishing Report 01/13/2015
Fishing on the Lower can be another good winter option as it is readily accessible and the trout love to eat a well drifted nymph rig even in the colder months.  There's a good possibility, too, as the month of January moves forward that stronger midge hatches will bring a few fish to the surface.  Hard part on the Lower is that it can be a windy location.  However, get a day that is partly cloudy to cloudy and low wind and it could be a good match!  By and large, the fish are going to be in the "buckets" and the deeper runs.  Look for as much depth as you can find and off speed water.  If you've read the other reports, you'll see that this is a common characteristic of successful winter fishing!  Be consistent and slow with your fishing approach.  One good drift through is not nearly enough.   50 casts?? Lower Madison Flyfishing Report 10/11/14
The flows on the lower have been fluctuating a bit lately making it a little difficult for anglers. The most consistant action has been with either a double nymph rig with a crayfish and a baetis nymph, or stripping and swinging streamers. The dry fly bite is inconsistant but it doesn't hurt to have a few patterns with you in case the baetis come off. The forcast is calling for cool, cloudy, and even rainy weather which should make for some excellent fishing.

Lower Madison Flyfishing Report 09/30/14
Fishing is improving on the Lower. The cloudy skies and cooler weather have made the fish more active. Stripping streamers, dead drifting a crayfish or a streamer with a soft hackle dropper will be your best bet unless you get a baetis hatch. Then use emerger patterns to get rising fish to eat.

Lower Madison Flyfishing Report 09/25/14
Fishing has slowed a bit on the lower. The bright sunny skies and warm weather may have had an affect on the fish. There have been fish caught but not in great numbers or size. Most were being taken on crayfish with small green machine droppers. Look for fishing to get better this weekend. Cooler temperatures and possibly rain in the forcast could make for some excellent fishing. Have some baetis in the fly box along with your favorite streamer pattern.
