Yellowstone River - May 30th, 2011
  • Recorded:
  • Windy and snow
  • 45 ° F
  • Fishing: Fair
Memorial Day.  It's really amazing how fast things can change around here! Just a few days ago we had on shorts and flip-flops.  Today, well, let's just say it's less than stellar early summer weather.  It's been snowing (hard) above 6500 feet and raining pretty mercilessly down here.  Eeeww!  I know.  Good thing (depending upon how you think of it) the river has dropped like a rock and I'd say it's actually quite fishable and may be so for the next several days. Weird.

Armstrong's, DePuy's and Nelson's Spring Creek - May 26th, 2011
  • Recorded:
  • Mostly sunny
  • 75 ° F

Bright sun today making things pretty tough.  Without the cloud cover the baetis won't really pop at all.  Today proved that pretty true.  It's getting fairly late into the hatch as well so when we get them, it's either really intense and short lived or they just peter off.  Look for nymphing the deeper, typical holding runs to be the best bets.

Madison River - May 26th, 2011
  • Recorded:
  • Mostly sunny
  • 75 ° F
  • Fishing: Good
Upper river below the West Fork is more off colored than above.  Clarity still isn't great even there but it is improving.  Beaver Creek is not throwing as much into the river so staying in the upper reaches is definitely the best bet.  Nymphing san juans, rubberleg stones with smaller beadhead droppers has been the go to.  Streamer fishing is picking up some respectable fish as well.

Gallatin River - May 26th, 2011

  • Fishing: Poor
Sunshine!  River's heading up in flow again.  Still dirty.... It's got a LONG ways to go before it covers House Rock, but we'll get there.

Rainy day today!  Really windy and quite cold too.  A good day to have the woodstove on Depuy's cranked up for warming fingers and toes between fishing forays.  Baetis on tap to be sure!  They'll likely be going all afternoon with weather like this.
