Madison River - June 3rd, 2011
  • Recorded:
  • Partly cloudy
  • 68 ° F
  • Fishing: Good
Clarity on the Upper, upper has greatly improved over the past couple days as it's been definitely cooler out and Cabing Creek, Beaver Creek are not throwing as much junk in at all.  West Fork still the main culprit but it seems to have abated as well.  The walk section is in really good shape right now.  The float area below the West Fork is coming on as well.  Both areas it's nymphing san juans, rubberleg stones in conjunction with smaller caddis and mayfly beadheads behind.  Streamers are good choices as well if you just don't want to watch the indicators...

Right back up!  While not super bright sun and hot, what we have had the past couple days has the river turned right back around and blowing out once again.  Please let this be the real deal!

Armstrong's, DePuy's and Nelson's Spring Creek - May 30th, 2011

Memorial Day.  Typical for Montana!  It's been snowing up in the mountains.  Parts of Yellowstone Park got as much as 2 feet!  Raining and pretty snotty down here in the valley.  Another one of those days that if you are out, having a fire in the woodstove makes for a bit more comfortable afternoon.  As it has been seemingly all spring, look for baetis to be present and at times intense in the late afternoon.

Upper reaches on the Maddy are definitely fishing better than anything else on the river.  West Fork throwing junk in.  Other feeders not terrible at this time.  We're experiencing the usual Memorial Day weekend weather around here--It's still nice today but the next 2 days look rough!  The wade section from Pine Butte up to Hebgen dam has OK visibility, not great.  Nymphing with rubberleg stones, san juans, and the like have been proven producers.  Streamers are doing well too.  Stay to black, black/olive, dark olive as your go-to colors in the off color waters.

Brrr!  Been snowing hard in the Park and the mountains surrounding here.  Whacky weather!!  Sun-70s and really nice.  2 days later and extended cold front has us wearing our winter Patagonia wear and watching the white stuff fall from the sky again.  Enough!  River's not fishable.....
