 View the Gallatin River Fishing ReportThe Gallatin River is clean and full of fish, one of Montana's most magnificent blue ribbon rainbow, cutthroat, and brown trout streams. And it is undoubtably a favorite destination of paddlers, anglers and families because of it's ease of access. Flowing out of the extreme northwestly corner of Wyoming and Yellowstone National Park into Montana all the way to the Headwaters of the Missouri, the Gallatin is precious resource. Contained within the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park at its outset, the Gallatin quickly grows from a small mountain stream into a full throttled river in short order. Upon your first acquaintence while still in the Park, the river has excellent opportunity for anglers to ply their luck against rainbow and cutthroat trout living in the "meadows" deeper pools and runs. After leaving the Park, the Gallatin begins to pick up steam and head into a narrowly defined canyon corridor that it will carry through for the next 30 or so miles. This canyon region, including the township of Big Sky, is filled with public access spots along highway 191. Because of this ease of access, the river is well used by visiting and local sportsmen alike. And not just fishermen. There are a number of commercial rafting and kayaking companies that enjoy the whitewater that the Gallatin offers. During the peak summer months, it's not unusual to have seemingly raft upon raft plow right through the very verdant pools you wish to fish! Best thing to do is fish either above where the majority of raft trips originate or below where they take out. Or- one can ply the waters either very early in the morning and again late in the evening. Either can be a great time to have the river largely to yourself! The river's aquatic insect population is consistent with most western trout streams. Multiple species of caddis along with stoneflies, midges, and mayfly species are prevalent food for the abundant trout residing in the river. In late summer the hoppers variations start to produce and fall is the time to start throwing larger streamer patterns. |
