Armstrong's, DePuy's and Nelson's Spring Creek - June 19th, 2011

  • Partly cloudy

Paradise Valley spring creeks are a good choice right now for those looking to get out on the water and not be looking at high and off color rivers.  Creeks are just starting to see a few PMDs when we get a day of moderate to good sunshine (yeah, I know, those have been numbered like the fingers on my hand).  Hatches should start to become a little more regular and intensify in the coming weeks.   There are rods available right now but by early July, you may be out of luck!  Best call well ahead of time.    We've been having good results with a "short leash" spring creek nymph rig throughout the day.  If we see a consistent riser, first identifying what we think they're eating and then getting a good presentation on the first couple of casts.  Be prepared to move around a fair bit on the creeks until you find the fish.

Wow!  Finally some summer like weather around here!  Upper 70s, sun, very very nice.  Making for some tough conditions on the spring creeks however.  Got to find those fish in the creeks in the deep pools and be patient on your nymphing game....

Memorial Day.  Typical for Montana!  It's been snowing up in the mountains.  Parts of Yellowstone Park got as much as 2 feet!  Raining and pretty snotty down here in the valley.  Another one of those days that if you are out, having a fire in the woodstove makes for a bit more comfortable afternoon.  As it has been seemingly all spring, look for baetis to be present and at times intense in the late afternoon.

Bright sun today making things pretty tough.  Without the cloud cover the baetis won't really pop at all.  Today proved that pretty true.  It's getting fairly late into the hatch as well so when we get them, it's either really intense and short lived or they just peter off.  Look for nymphing the deeper, typical holding runs to be the best bets.

Rainy day today!  Really windy and quite cold too.  A good day to have the woodstove on Depuy's cranked up for warming fingers and toes between fishing forays.  Baetis on tap to be sure!  They'll likely be going all afternoon with weather like this.

Can't really complain much at all around here.  Seems our weather has been settling into a decent pattern as of late.  A lot of rivers in the area are totally blown out with runoff really kicking in.  The spring creeks of course don't have runoff so we'll continue to be fishing right through the muddy waters elsewhere.  Blue wings are tapering off some.  We're still getting some pretty intense hatches on the most overcast days; especially if it's a light rain and very little wind.
Early season $75/day rates are in effect here until June 14
