Yellowstone River Fishing Report

The Yellowstone River is seeing some really awesome BWO hatches mid afternoon around 2:00PM with this cloudy weather! Tomorrow is supposed to be the same as today (cold and rainy) so expect the hatch. The next few days are supposed to have mostly sunny skies so you may not see as many bugs. Search around with your purple haze, parachute adams, and other attractor dries if you do not see fish actively feeding. Dropping a PT nymph, Baetis nymph, or Zebra midge off of your searching dry is a good idea. Streamers stripped through the currents and in the deep […]

Yellowstone National Park

Recently the water in Yellowstone National Park has been fishing well. The Madison, Firehole and Gibbon would be a great place to start. Look for BWO’s and Caddis in the morning. Once things warm up throw terrestrials. The Madison and Firehole can be very fun swinging soft hackles and stripping small streamers. Lots of options. Other then the western region of the park the Gardner river near the north entrance is also fishing well. Fish those deep holes to find some big browns that have run up from the Yellowstone. You may have to let it warm a bit in […]

Fall on the Spring Creek

We have seen some tough fishing the last few days with the unseasonably warm and sunny weather. Things should get back in shape pretty soon as we look forward to cooler, wetter weather early next week. Angler’s have still had success on midge larva, pupa, and adult patterns. Baetis nymphs will also be a good choice out there. 6x or 7x with at least a 12 foot leader is a must to get fish to feed. Sneaking up on them and presenting your fly(s) downstream will give you the best odds at hooking fish. An excellent time to be on […]

The Yellowstone River

The Yellowstone River is still running clear and low. Water temperatures are still looking good through this week even though it has been pretty warm(even hot) and sunny. Most of the reports are of okay to slower fishing but we have had a few really good days on the upper stretches with terrestrials. As things cool off early next week and we see some precipitation the fishing should only get better. Look for BWO’s if you get some clouds. Your small parachute attracters will be a good choice. The streamer bite has been a little hit or miss but should […]

Yellowstone River Fishing Report

There’s snow in them mountains! Yesterday reports on the Yellowstone were mixed. We heard of very good fishing above Yankee Jim Canyon and in the upper valley. Mid and low valley were not so great. Fish were being taken on mostly mayfly patterns. BWO’s, and Drakes. This was due to the cooler rainy weather we saw. Wind was a bit of an issue yesterday. Today looks to be about the same only we have some color to the water from Gardner to Livingston. This is to be expected from the Lamar and some of the other smaller Yellowstone tributaries. You […]

September Fishing on the Yellowstone River

September is here and we feel very lucky this year to still have good fishing in our backyard. Mother Nature gave us a scare this spring with a shorter runoff but due to numerous rain showers and storms, our water has kept cool and fishing has been pretty good. A big thank you to all of our summer guests this year. We hope to see you again in the future! To everyone joining us for September and October, welcome! We are looking forward to a great end of the summer and what is shaping up to be a great fall. […]

Terrestrial’s, Nocturnal Stone’s, Trico’s and Drake’s

We were greeted at the shop this morning by a small cluster of Trico’s, (see the three tails)? Just one of the options for you out on the river right now. The Yellowstone River has been fishing pretty well this last week. Very good dry fly action on the Nocturnal Stone imitations east of Livingston has been reported. More farmers have cut hay again and terrestrials have been moving to the banks. Mid valley the terrestrial bite has been good. Wouldn’t say it’s amazing but some good fish have been caught on the hopper fly. Beetles and Ants will still […]

Cooler Weather…

Burrrr…. Summer gone? Not a chance but the cooler temps this last week sure made us bundle up. The weather definitely has put a slow down to the hopper and terrestrial action in the morning. Once things heat up those bugs get going and will get some action. The Yellowstone River has been fishing pretty well. The hopper/nymph dropper rig is the go to for most. The white fish bite has been on so you may stay away from the bead head nymphs if you are looking for trout. We seem to be finding trout in deeper water and with […]

And So It Goes…

Late last week rain and storms put our river out of commission. It looks to be the same today. These pictures were taken up at Gardner this AM and show that water clarity is not great. Fortunately the river is clearing, but very slowly! The weather man is calling for drier conditions for the week with possible T-Storms. We may even see some decent clarity as early as tomorrow morning but it may be until Wednesday until we see good visibility. We will keep you updated as much as possible throughout the week. Saying that people are fishing the river […]
