Yellowstone River Fishing Report August 11, 2019

The river is starting to clear up slowly but there is still mud in the system. This morning we had about 1.5 feet of visibility coming through Gardiner, MT. We had eyes in the park yesterday evening and still had mud coming out of the Lamar. Although it had cleared up a lot since that morning. We expect the river to remain off color for probably another day or so. There were two clear spots in between plugs, one between Mallards Rest and the Yellowstone Edge RV Park yesterday evening, and one between Brogan’s Landing and Yankee Jim this morning. We are […]

Yellowstone River Fishing Report July 27th, 2019

The Yellowstone River continues to fish well through the rising temperatures this week. Despite temps getting up into the high 80s and low 90s, the fishing has still been great. Mornings have proven to be the best time of day, but folks are still moving fish throughout the latter half of the day. Flows on the Yellowstone are still continuing to drop, however it should start to plateau here soon. As always, keep your eyes on the graphs, especially any tributaries in the Lamar Valley. We do have projected storms in the coming days which may send a mud plug […]

Yellowstone National Park Fishing Report, July 27th 2019

Yellowstone National Park Fishing Report July 27th, 2019 Yellowstone National Park is starting to get really good! The Lamar Valley is back in shape and the fishing has been great. Occasional rain storms have put mud in some of the tributaries, but tend to push through quick and doesn’t take long for streams to clear up again. Salmonflies are no longer to be found on the Yellowstone River, but Goldens are still around. If you are in the Tower area, run down to the Yellowstone and see if you can move any fish on Chubbies, Chernobyl Ants, or Water Walkers. […]

Yellowstone River FIshing Report July 20th, 2019

Yellowstone River Fishing Report July 20th, 2019 The river is still fishing well throughout the system. Different stretches offer different types of fishing as most of you know. Starting up top, above Yankee Jim Canyon, there are still lots of bugs out. If you are looking to fish dries for the day this is you section. Yellow Sallies, Caddis, some Green Drakes, and occasional Golden Stones have been out. Look for those deep back water pools with structure and drift a good presentation for lazy Cutthroat to chase. Definitely can’t go wrong with a larger dry fly up top trailed […]

Yellowstone River Fishing Report July 15th, 2019   The Yellowstone River is still continuing to drop and the river is starting to fish well! Although the Salmonflies have moved well into the Yellowstone National Park boundaries, there is still plenty of opportunity to catch fish on top. Caddis have been coming off consistently throughout the day and especially in the later parts of the day. Be sure to have your Elk Hair Caddis, Blooms Caddis, CDC Caddis and similar variations in […]

Yellowstone National Park Fishing Report July 15th, 2019

With the Firehole and Madison Rivers temps too high, look to fish other rivers and streams in the park. Streams in the Lamar Valley are dropping into shape but shouldn’t be prime for another week or so. Smaller streams will be in good shape and fish are hungry! Smaller creeks like Black Tail and Obsidian Creek will fish well with small attractor dry flies like Royal Wulff’s #14-16, Stimulators #14-16, and Parachute Adam’s variations in #14-16. You can drop a small nymph on the bottom but those fish shouldn’t be too picky. Slough Creek and the Lamar River may still […]

Yellowstone River Update

Yellowstone River Update June 6th, 2019

Runoff is officially in full force. Water clarity on the Yellowstone and most tributaries is very minimal. Hopefully there are no other pauses in the snow melt so that the Yellowstone River will be fishable by early July. The weather has been consistently sunny and warm, with some afternoon storms mixed in. Even though we are experiencing runoff, we are still spending time on nearby fisheries including the lower Madison and local private lakes for float trips; in addition to walk and wade trips on the Paradise Valley spring creeks and within Yellowstone National Park. Anglers are consistently catching fish […]
