Early September Yellowstone River Fishing Report

Early September fishing in the Yellowstone – shorts, sandals, and sunscreen still a daily mantra. Change? Guessing sometime soon. A few of the riverside cottonwoods are showing a little tinge of what may be coming ahead. A few branches here-there with some color other than green. We love fall and can’t wait to see the riverbanks all ablaze in gold…. Fishing is decently good. There are tough days to be sure. And others that have darn near every trout in the river seemingly willing to eat a well placed fly. The water is significantly cooler in the mornings making for […]

Labor Day Looming

The end of summer? Think not. Labor Day week may signify that all the kid’s are back in school. And August is one for the books. But its not the end of summer…. It’ll be a few weeks for that yet! We’re continuing to see some fun fishing in the area. One of our favorite places is inside Yellowstone Park. As summertime crowds are diminished and the serious “Fall Angler” hatch hasn’t quite started, fishing in the Park right now can be a super fun option. Walk fishing in the NE Corner can be rewarding. We’re seeing good fishing on […]

Yellowstone River Fishing Report for August 18, 2917

A good week on the Stone shaping up. Upper valley dry fly activity has been good to excellent with a lot of quality fish looking up for a meal. Terrestrial bugs are definitely the show stoppers and will likely continue to be for at least the next several weeks. As August slips to September, we’ll be watching for the weather changes that will signal that fall is inbound. Until then, however, you can expect to see days on the water with good opportunities. Make sure that you are on your game when that big brown finds your hopper irresistibly tasty

Doing Just Fine, Thank You

How did August sneak up so fast? Seems like everything around here has been fishing well and in many cases, just keep getting better. Fish are looking up which is nice. Been hearing more and more about hopper bite and terrestrial patterns being the goods. What’s your favorite grasshopper dry? Time to put it to the test! We have been seeing a decent cooling trend as of late which is quite welcome. Mornings are edging toward wishing you had a light coat or hoody for the first little bit. Hoping this awesome weather stays for awhile. Actually hearing that anglers […]

Yellowstone River Fishing Report for Late July

Good fishing on the Yellowstone River. Flows are still a fair bit above what they have been in the past couple years this late into July. But- conditions are setting up for a really positive late July through September time period. We are definitely excited about the prospects for the remainder of the season! With the bigger water, some of the good dry fly fishing that has been experienced in early July the past couple years just hasn’t been available to us, yet. It’s just now starting to drop into that better water time. And fish are starting to look […]

NE Cornner Working to Find It’s Groove

Starting to see the rivers and creeks in the Northeast Corner turn on as of recently. Several of our guides have been in the Park and finding some fun fishing. Still lots of water, but this corner of the Park is finally coming into its own and will be a great option for the rest of the summer! Good stonefly activity has been found on the Gardner, Yellowstone, and just kicking in on the Lamar. PMDs and some Green drakes are the game on Slough creek as well as the Lamar. Fish have been looking up more and more as […]

Holding Pattern?

Yellowstone River is starting to shape up pretty decently. Kaitlyn here found herself a dandy of a brown floating the upper valley yesterday. You can see by her smile that she’s digging fly fishing! Is it Rockem-Sockem fishing out there? Not really. Just being honest. But, folks are getting them. And I won’t be one to downplay that at all. Having fun is the name of the game! River conditions are still “early season” and it’s big out there. Bigger than what a lot of folks might be able to think back on. How big? 10k big. So, yeah, I […]

People are Asking

What’s the Yellowstone looking like? Take a look yourself. Here’s a pick from the Mill Creek bridge. Yeah, if the river doesn’t head back into higher CFS range again tomorrow or Tuesday from the high 80 degree temps we are going to get, things could be turning the corner here real quick! It’s still nuking along at 13,000 plus cubic feet per second. That’s a lot of water going under the bridge! Like 13,000 basketballs from bank to bank, surface to bottom, EVERY SECOND! But yesterday was the first day it’s had a noticeable more tinge of “Going to Green” […]

PMDs on the Menu

Paradise Valley Spring Creeks showing signs that the long-awaited PMD hatch is getting underway for the summer. We’ve had guides on the creeks most every day this past week and while some days have been definitely better than others, the PMD mayflies have been showing up. And the fish are starting to key in on them more each day. We’ve had a couple cold and rainy (OK, downright wet) days this past week that have made the hatch sputter and not really go that well. But with the warmer days on tap for the week ahead, things should be kicking […]

The Opener

Yellowstone Park Opener yesterday. Good fishing on the classic Park areas to be expected. Firehole, Gibbon, and Madison are the zones to focus on. The NE Corner is way off color and very high waters due to runoff. The NW Corner with the aforementioned Firehole, Gibbon, and Madison are in much better shape. Though not perfect, the waters are high here too, they are at least fishable. First day reports of a few caddis and PMDs on the Firehole had some rods bent. Madison fished well as seen by the photo above. Madison was almost entirely sub surface to find […]
